What Is Retinal Detachment?

Retinal detachment separates the neural retinal layer from the retinal pigment epithelium and underlying choroid. Without immediate surgical reattachment, the detached retina suffers oxygen starvation and rapid photoreceptor cell death.

Specialized Surgical Techniques by Prof. Dr. Md. Arif Hayat Khan Pathan

With over two decades of dedicated vitreoretinal surgical practice and international FRCS training, Dr. Arif Pathan utilizes sutureless 23G and 25G instrumentation:
- Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV): The vitreous gel is removed, subretinal fluid is drained, endolaser seals all tears 360 degrees, and an intraocular gas or silicone oil bubble secures the retina.
- Scleral Buckling: A flexible silicone band is positioned around the outer sclera to relieve vitreous traction.
- Combined Phaco-Vitrectomy: Simultaneous cataract removal with intraocular lens implantation and retinal reattachment in complex cases.
