The macula is the central part of the retina responsible for high-resolution visual acuity needed for reading, driving, and recognizing faces. AMD causes damage to macular cells, leading to central blind spots.

The Two Types of AMD:

- Dry AMD: Slow, gradual thinning of the macula with yellow deposits called drusen. Managed with antioxidant AREDS2 vitamin supplements.
- Wet AMD: Sudden growth of fragile, leaking blood vessels beneath the retina. Requires prompt monthly anti-VEGF injections to prevent severe scarring.
